DUTIES: The University System of Maryland (USM) invites applications and nominations for the vacant Contingent Category II fulltime Exempt Staff position of Network Engineer, with primary duties relating to video-based distance education. As Maryland's public system of higher education, the USM provides outstanding educational opportunities, performs groundbreaking basic and applied research, delivers vital services to communities and individuals, and fuels economic and workforce development. The USM comprises 11 degree-granting institutions, two research institutions, and two regional higher education centers. This position will be working with the University of Maryland Academic Telecommunications System project (UMATS). UMATS provides inter-campus networking services to the USM campuses as well as selected public, private, and community colleges. UMATS also supports a network of two-way interactive compressed video systems utilizing Polycom technology. This position will be responsible for supporting this network as well as the underlying TCP/IP network. Evening hours will be required.
QUALIFICATIONS: To effectively support this network, the Network Engineer should have prior experience in supporting IP-based video systems, managing and configuring network equipment including Cisco, Force10, and Juniper, and have an understanding of the fundamentals of TCP/IP and the Internet. The ideal candidate should have a Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Network Engineering, or a related field and at least 3 years of experience in the operation and design of an enterprise-wide telecommunication system. Good interpersonal skills are essential, as this position communicates directly with users at all levels of the organization.
